Scholarship

1 placement per year

If you are unable to afford an artist funded placement at Mayu, we would love for you to still consider coming.

Though you will need to pay for your own flights and food, if you are successful in applying for a scholarship, you will receive a 1-3 month placement during the Winter season (December/January/February) including almost every optional extra, at zero cost.

We are keenly aware that the arts are sadly underfunded around the world, and our long term goal is to transition all 4 residency placements each year into scholarship placements.

If you stay at Mayu on a scholarship placement, you will receive all the basic residency features for free:

  1. Private bedroom, bathroom and kitchen
  2. Shared studio use
  3. Closing Exhibition
  4. Artist concierge service
  5. Art and manga library
  6. Camera Obscura
  7. Private garden
  8. Guided tours
  9. Personal E-Bike

From the list of optional extras, you will also receive FOR FREE:

  1. Japanese lessons - up to 5 per week, host’s schedule permitting
  2. Professional video production - a simple documentary portrait of your time at Mayu (see previous residents for samples)
  3. Darkroom - both use of the darkroom, and a workshop on how to use it if necessary (all chemicals provided, paper must be brought or purchased separately)
  4. Fine art printing - ¥55,000 credit towards fine art giclee printing by a local print specialist

You can choose to pay an additional fee for optional extras such as:

  1. Bringing your partner to stay
  2. Additional guided tours
  3. Haneda airport pickup/dropoff
