The light seethes and shimmers, reflecting in the sunlit room. Everything seems simultaneously familiar and alien. There's a vague feeling that if this is a dream, it is better to try to stay in it for as long as possible.

"This work was inspired by the animistic culture and philosophy that has been deeply rooted in Japan since ancient times. I imagined each and every plant having a soul and coexisting vibrantly with people."
"I tried to create this illustration in such a way that it would brighten up any room it is placed in, just like a bouquet of flowers.
"New black and white drawing made for Harugo no Mayu, thank you very much everyone."
"It's just a humble, cooperative field we pass by with our son on the way to the park, but it's such a great mark of the passing seasons. Not so long ago, it was covered in snow, and now look—the eggplants are almost ripe!
Originally painted with watercolors and white poster color paint on Arches cold pressed watercolor paper, with pencil underdrawing. It took a good few sessions of standing in front of my easel to render all the architectural details and plants, but I got the spirit of the place right down!"
“You’re planting a new sprout, hoping it will thrive. Will you be able to give it the necessary care? Was the seed strong enough to survive? Should you protect it from the environment, or would it be better if it developed its own immunity to external stresses? You won't know unless you give it a chance.”
“I painted this artwork with watercolours and made the lineart with gray colored dry brush pen, to have the lineart blend into the painting. I wanted the piece to have a magical feel to it with light beaming from behind the creature, and the character gazing at it in surprise.”
"From cloudfaring caravans to luminous cities beneath the sea, no corner of the realm is beyond the reach of these couriers and their magical steeds."
“Everyone has their own nightly routine. I painted this moment at the end of the day.”
When I come to a new town and pass an old, small store that is closed, I wonder if it is closed due to its working schedule or if it has been closed a long time ago. I look into the windows, trying to figure out if the items displayed for sale are still relevant. Is this a well-preserved time capsule, or just a thrift store?
“The painter lays down a careful stroke, and the tree gains another leaf. Once just a simple sprout, it now forms a towering canopy. The tree is no more than the sprout, and the sprout is no less than the tree.”
“The sounds breathed out by living things comfort me. Sometimes they're loud. Sometimes they envelop me like soft music.”
I dreamt of taking a walk in spring. I imagined these two companions going out together. I’ve always wanted to paint a black shiba, so I enjoyed making this piece. The title translates to “Spring”.
Monokubo sadly passed away in 2022. Their sales will be conferred to their family.
“A composition of certain influences with a perspective that is strange or confined with a feel of artificiality. I hope everyone will have a lovely autumn.”
“I wanted to create a piece inspired by Finnish nature and was compelled to create a painting depicting an 'ikimetsä', an undisturbed old forest. 'Kuvajainen' in Finnish means a mirage, a hallucination or a reflection. I made this mixed media painting with poster colors and watercolors. I wanted the rendering of the characters to be simplistic compared to the highly detailed background so that the painting would look like a moment from an animation.”
“Sometimes it gets snowy too early. This snow sticks around the trees, fences, street lights, turning the city into a white garden. Recently I had a thought that a view like that might be even more impressive than the spring bloom. But such snow often melts so fast. As if nothing had happened.”
“Autumn leads a procession of changing leaves, as they fall through the air, dancing like fish in a stream.”

This image is a collage using pencil, graphite, pen, ink and acrylic over recycled paper. I tried to include some of my favourite visual elements; the beach, mountains, toys and dolls. I like my images to look old. The title of the image translates to “Black Sun Paranoia”.
“When you see an image of some place you gain memories of it. Even if you have never been there - and there might be no such a place at all - but now you know about it. And it exists somewhere within you, just as if it was real. In my opinion, this is one of the most exciting things about art.”

“This artwork was inspired by my trip to Osaka in November 2018. I visited Nara during that time and I remember eating super sweet and juicy kaki fruits there as they were in season. I wanted this painting to have a mix of fantasy and everyday life. This original painting is made with colored inks and it portrays a trio of tanuki causing mischief.”

“This illustration was inspired by the manga works of Kozue Amano and Hitoshi Ashinano, and my readings on the Japanese concept and term "mono no aware," which roughly translates to an awareness of the impermanence of things. Most of all though, I just wanted to draw a vending machine!”

“In the place where I live, summer is very short. Each year I try to notice how it starts, how it changes and how it ends. It makes me a little sad when I notice that the days are getting shorter, because that means the summer will soon be over. But it’s also a very important bittersweet part that I usually remember the most.”
